Why I Limit the Number of Photos in My Photography Packages

A question that comes up from time to time with prospective clients is why my photography packages include a limited number of photos. It is a fair question, especially in a world where taking photos is easy and digital storage feels endless.

To better understand that, it helps to know what happens behind the scenes after your session.

After each session, I carefully review and cull the gallery down to the photos that show genuine connection and expression. From there, you choose your favorites. This approach allows you to select the moments that mean the most to you, including subtle expressions or small details that may hold personal significance.

Carefully Culled, Professionally Prepared Photos

During every session, I take more photos than you will ultimately see. This is part of the creative process that involves adjusting lighting, refining poses, and allowing space for natural expressions to unfold.

After your session, I review every photo and remove near duplicates, test frames, and anything that does not meet my professional standards. What remains is a thoughtfully curated proofing gallery prepared for your review. From this gallery, you make the final selections included in your package.

Quality Editing Takes Time — Professional Editing Goes Beyond a Preset

Your proofing gallery receives minimal editing so you can view a clean, consistent set of photos and choose your favorites without waiting on full retouching for every single photo.

Once you select your favourites, I complete the final retouching on those chosen photos. This is where I fine-tune details to ensure natural skin tones, accurate colors, blemish removal and consistency across your final collection.

By limiting the number of photos included in packages, I can:

  • Give your selected favourites the time and attention they deserve

  • Maintain a consistent, polished look across sessions

  • Deliver final galleries on time without rushing the process

This ensures the photos you receive are finished with care and meet the quality you expect.

Let’s Be Real About How Photos Are Used

In my experience, most clients truly fall in love with about 10–15 photos from their session. Out of those, families typically choose around five to display as wall art in their home.

That does not mean the other photos are not meaningful. It simply reflects how people naturally enjoy and use their photos. A smaller, intentional collection makes it easier to choose favourites, print artwork, and enjoy what you have invested in.

Why I Do Not Automatically Include Every Photo

Not every photo captured during a session is meant to be delivered. Some are part of setting up a pose, calming a newborn, or fine-tuning light and angles.

By limiting what is included upfront, I can:

  • Maintain a consistent professional standard

  • Avoid overwhelming you with unnecessary choices

  • Give every delivered photo the care and attention it deserves

This approach protects quality while still giving you flexibility.

Options Matter, and You Always Have Them

Everyone is different, and I believe your photography experience should reflect that.

Some clients only want ten photos. Others prefer a larger collection. Still others want every photo from their gallery.

That is why I offer:

  • The option to add a few additional photos

  • The option to add ten or more

  • The option to purchase the full gallery

You are never locked into one choice. You decide what works best for you.

Why I Do Not Deliver Unedited or RAW Photos

Another question that occasionally comes up is whether I provide unedited or RAW photos. The short answer is no and this is standard practice across the professional photography industry.

RAW files are unfinished work. They are similar to a rough draft, not a final product. Delivering unfinished files to paying clients would not reflect professional standards. Delivering RAW photos would be like a baker handing you unbaked ingredients instead of a finished cake, or a painter selling you a canvas before the paint has dried.

Professional photography does not end when the shutter clicks. Editing is a critical part of the process and is where color, tone, consistency, and style come together. Every photo you receive reflects my work, my training, and my professional standards.

Providing unfinished files to paying clients would not only misrepresent my work, but it would also fall outside accepted industry practices.

Final Thoughts

Photography is personal. My role is to create a carefully culled gallery that reflects connection, expression, and quality. Your role is to choose the photos that feel right to you, rather than having those decisions made for you.

Some clients want ten photos. Others want a larger collection. Some want every photo from their gallery. My packages are designed to support all of those preferences, while maintaining professional standards and a thoughtful editing process.

Limiting the number of photos included upfront is not about restriction. It is about quality, clarity, and giving you meaningful choices.
