And How I Answer Them at Debi Spencer-Zerby Photography

Bringing a new baby into the world is magical and those first few weeks are incredibly fleeting. Choosing someone to capture your baby’s earliest days is a big decision, and it should be made with care. Not all photographers are trained or experienced in safely and beautifully photographing newborns, so here are 5 essential questions every parent should ask along with how I personally answer them for the families I serve.

1. Are You Trained in Newborn Safety?

You should absolutely ask this. Your baby’s safety is non-negotiable. Newborn photography involves much more than just posing a sleeping baby. It requires an understanding of infant physiology, developmental stages, and how to safely support and position them. Would you take your baby to a doctor or any other professional in those early days that hand no education?

At Debi Spencer-Zerby Photography:
Yes, I am trained in newborn safety and hold a qualified newborn photographer credential with APNPI (Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International). I have completed extensive training in newborn posing, handling, and safe workflow practices and not just an online course. I have had multiple hands on training. Your baby will always be supported, never forced into uncomfortable positions, and every session is baby-led. I prioritize calm, gentle transitions and take breaks as needed for feeding or cuddling.

2. What Experience and Credentials Do You Have?

Experience matters—deeply. Newborns are unpredictable, so it is important your photographer knows how to adapt and work calmly under pressure.

At Debi Spencer-Zerby Photography:
I am a multi-published, award-winning and fully insured photographer who specializes in newborns, maternity, children, high school seniors and families. I am also a licensed-registered business in the state of Wyoming and a member of the PPA (Professional Photographers of America). I have photographed countless newborns over 11 years and was honoured to be named Best Photographer in Cheyenne in both 2023 and 2024. My studio is known for both technical excellence and emotional storytelling and I truly love all those little babies even the little bit fussy ones.

3. What Is Your Studio Setup Like?

The environment matters just as much as the photographer. Is it clean? Cozy? Thoughtfully prepared for newborns?

At Debi Spencer-Zerby Photography:
My studio is a warm and welcoming space located right here in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It is designed with comfort in mind for both babies and parents. I have a full range (specifically made just for newborn photography) props, wraps, bonnets, headbands, outfits, and backdrops. You do not need to bring a thing except the baby, diapers and milk. I also have a beautiful lifestyle space for more natural, family-focused images, as well as a main studio space for those timeless posed portraits. Parents are welcome to relax, have a snack, or just enjoy a quiet moment while I work my magic with your little one.

4. What Are Your Sick Policies and Rescheduling Options?

Babies, siblings and parents and the photographer can get sick, and life can be unpredictable. Flexibility and compassion go a long way.

At Debi Spencer-Zerby Photography:
I totally understand that life happens especially with newborns. I have a flexible rescheduling policy for illness or unexpected issues, and I ask the same courtesy in return. The studio is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before every session, and I never photograph when I am unwell. Your family’s health and comfort are always my priority. I provide guidelines prior to the session to help navigate any potential issues with illness.

5. What Is Included in the Session, and What Is the Process?

You deserve to know exactly what you are getting before, during, and after your session.

At Debi Spencer-Zerby Photography:
My newborn sessions are designed to be a stress-free, all-inclusive experience. I offer several session types—from petite to full storytelling packages with options for heirloom quality prints and digital files. Once you book, I walk you through everything: how to prep, what to expect, and how your images will be delivered. You will never feel rushed, and you will always know what comes next. My contract and prep guide will provide you with all the steps and tips and tricks.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right newborn photographer is about more than just pretty pictures. It is about trusting someone to handle your baby with care and capture their brand-newness in a way that feels authentic to you.

If you are looking for someone who will cherish your little one just like you do, I would love to be that person for your family.

Let’s create something beautiful together.

Warmly,
Debi
