When Should You Book Your Newborn Photos?
There is plenty to think about when you are expecting a baby. Between appointments, preparing the nursery, and choosing a name, newborn photos might feel like something you can arrange after your little one arrives.
My recommendation is to book your newborn session during your second trimester. Planning ahead gives us time to discuss your session and reserve space around your due date, so you have one less thing to organize once baby is here.
Why Book Before Your Baby Arrives?
Newborn sessions require time, preparation, and flexibility. I plan for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, and whatever your baby needs throughout the session. I also leave room in my schedule to adjust dates because babies rarely arrive exactly when expected.
For that reason, I can only accommodate a limited number of newborn bookings. Waiting until after your baby is born may mean I do not have an opening within your preferred timeframe.
Booking during pregnancy also gives us time to talk about the style of photos you would like, colors you love, and whether you want to include parents, siblings, or your family dog.
How Do We Choose a Date Before Baby Is Born?
A question I often hear is, “How can I book when I do not know when my baby will arrive?”
We begin with your estimated due date and reserve space around that time. Once your baby arrives, you contact me so we can confirm the session date.
Your due date helps us plan, but your baby’s arrival helps us finalize the timing. If your little one arrives earlier or later than expected, we adjust accordingly.
How Old Should Baby Be for Newborn Photos?
For posed newborn sessions, I generally aim to photograph babies when they are approximately 7–21 days old preferably around the second week. During those early days, many babies sleep for longer stretches and are comfortable curling into the positions you see in my newborn portfolio.
However, that timeframe is a guide. Every baby is different, and your baby’s comfort and needs come first. No pose is more important than their safety.
If your baby is already older than two weeks, please reach out. We can discuss their age, the type of session you would like, and my availability. Beautiful newborn photos can still include awake expressions, gentle wrapping, and time in their parents’ arms.
What If Baby Arrives Early or Needs More Time?
Sometimes the first few weeks look different from what you expected. An early arrival, a longer hospital stay, or recovery after delivery can affect when your family is ready for photos.
Please keep me informed so we can talk about the timing together. You do not need to rush into the studio simply to meet an age window. The session should be planned around your baby’s needs and your family’s circumstances.
Can You Book Maternity and Newborn Photos Together?
Yes! If you would like both maternity and newborn photos, planning them together during your second trimester makes the process easier.
Maternity sessions are generally scheduled between 28 and 35 weeks, depending on how you are feeling and your pregnancy. Booking ahead gives us time to plan your maternity session while also reserving space for your newborn photos.
Together, these sessions tell the story of waiting for your little one and finally holding them in your arms.
Already Had Your Baby? Please Still Ask
If your baby has arrived and you have not booked photos yet, you are welcome to contact me.
While I cannot guarantee a last-minute opening, I am happy to check my schedule and discuss the options available. Please do not assume you have missed your chance without asking.
